The newest craze that sweeping the nation, the Subway “Five Dollar Footlong” campaign, has somewhat come to an end. I went into the store yesterday after a workout to discover that now only certain sandwiches are available at that price. I’m not surprised, as a manager originally told me the promotion was supposed to end on April 20th. Read more… »
There is a lot written about creativity. How to find it and why we lose it. There are too many theories to subscribe to, and I have no intent on going over them right now. However, I would like to highlight a very crafty example of creativity I experienced today.
Have you been watching the recent NBA Playoffs? You’ve probably seen one of the several commercials the NBA has released featuring two NBA stars on split screen, reading the same inspirational script at a synchronous rate. They look something like this: Read more… »
I’m floundering. I’m a fifth-year college senior and when people ask me the inevitable question “what do you want to do?”, I don’t have any sort of answer. I’m still just figuring things out. Maybe that isn’t so bad for someone who is only 22 years old, but on the flip side of the coin I could have easily graduated college with a Masters degree by now.
There are over six billion people on the Earth, far more than there has ever been before. And due to advancements in communication technology, most notably the Internet, it makes each person increasingly less significant. Who cares if you fall off the face of the Earth? So what if you get lost in the fray? To some extent I have a pretty strong need for achievement. Growing up in school I tied a large amount of my identity to being the smart kid; in retrospect, I would probably spend more effort on interpersonal relationships and less on the computer or doing homework, but that’s the past.
Let’s say you die tomorrow. How will you be remembered? Even better, what if you die in 10 years from now? What will you have accomplished in the next ten years to make yourself remembered and cherished past your time shared with the rest of us?
Looking at Dennis Perkins’ 10 strategies from Leading At The Edge, I can relate a personal experience with strategy eight - Lighten Up!. For those of you who are not aware, Thirst Thursday relates to the idea that Thursday night is a time to drink and party. Who really needs Friday class after all…if you even have it to begin with. Thus, I was somewhat surprised to find out about regular Thirst Thursday events scheduled throughout the summer during my internship at the Nike World Headquarters. Read more… »
For one of my college courses this term I have been reading the book Leading At The Edge by Dennis Perkins. The background is that he uses the inspirational Antarctic journey of Robert Shackleton and his crew, as they survive against all odds and the blistering elements, as a case for which he proposes his 10 strategies for leading at the edge. While I find some of the content in this book to be interesting and useful, it is somewhat too simplistic and doesn’t provide anything very actionable or groundbreaking. Here are the 10 strategies:
- Vision and Quick Victories: Never lose sight of the ultimate goal, and focus energy on short-term objectives.
- Symbolism and Personal Example: Set a personal example with visible, memorable symbols and behaviors.
- Optimism and Reality: Instill optimism and self-confidence, but stay grounded in reality. Read more… »
Like many people, I have played around with blogs for quite some time. While I’ve written for a few various blogs in the past, I felt it was time to take it to the next level and go through the whole process of designing, developing, and owning my very own site. Of course, this begs the question of what do I want to write about.
This site is designed to be about people. In many of my books, lectures and personal experiences, the term charisma is used commonly, yet I have never heard a solid definition of what charisma is. It’s somewhat unquantifiable and undefinable, yet we all know what it is when we see it. Using this a springboard, this site is dedicated to content related to any aspect of personal development (physical, spiritual, mental, etc.). Furthermore, being people-focused, you can expect to see elements of psychology, marketing, and technology creep into the discussion as well.
Although I have read some personal development material, I am by no means an expert and am still growing and learning with each post that I make. I hope you will as well. No matter what your situation is regarding finances, health, or religion, I believe it is a human trait to want to better ourselves in one fashion or another, even if it isn’t inherently obvious.
Now it’s time to get started!
